Alien
Citizen or a national of a country other than
the
United States; also known as a "foreign
national"

Asylum
Humanitarian permission to remain in the
US
Child
An unmarried son or daughter under 21 years

age
Citizen
A person who, either through birth or
through
naturalization, has full rights, privileges
and
protection of living in the
US Dual
Citizenship
Having citizenship in two countries; Allowed
in
the US as long as US citizenship is
not
renounced or activities in second country
are
beyond that of an ordinary citizen.
Exclusion
Process of being denied entry into the US.
Foreign
National
An individual who is a citizen or a national of
a
country other than the United States.
Green
Card
Card issued by the INS which, at the
minimum,
gives a foreign national (or "alien") permission
to
work in the US.
I-94
Document which states place, date, status
of
entry and time allowed to remain in the U.S.
Immediate
Relative
Spouses, parents and children of United
States
Citizens.
INS
Immigration & Naturalization Service
Naturalization
The process by which a foreign national
acquires
US citizenship
Nonimmigrant
Temporary residents or visitors in the US.
Parole
Permission which allows a foreign national
to
physically enter the US yet still be considered
to
not have legally entered the country.
Passport
The national identity document which
facilitates
international travel.
Permanent
Resident/LPR
Individual who is able to reside in the US on
a
permanent basis; has many but not all of
the
rights and privileges that a US citizen
possesses.
Refugee
a person ouside of the US and unable or
unwilling
to return to his or her country because
of
persecution or a well-rounded fear of
persecution
on account of race, religion, nationality,
political
opinion or membership in a particular
social
group.
Status
Description of foreign national (or "alien")
issued
by the INS inspector upon entering the U.S.
Visa
document which allows you to
request
permission to enter the United States at
a
designated port of entry. |
